"French Cambodian comic artist Tian Veasna (his last name means “destiny”) was born in Cambodia in April 1975, three days after the Khmer Rouge takeover, during his family’s harrowing exodus from the capital city of Phnom Penh. Year of the Rabbit eloquently captures the new order’s horrors – starvation, paranoia and violence – through firsthand accounts of the artist’s parents and close relatives. Thanks to good karma, Veasna’s father Khim – a doctor under the old regime – would be miraculously spared at several critical moments by those who remembered his past kindnesses.
