"At first glance, the friendship between 17-year-old Abigail and her 35-year-old teacher Erica might raise some eyebrows. But the two share something in common that no one else at their school in small-town South Dakota knows: Erica is a transgender woman, closeted to everyone except Abigail, who came out as trans as a teenager. Life can be difficult in their conservative town, particularly in the lead-up to the 2016 election, in which local leaders have taken anti-trans positions.
