Not a whole lot happens for most of the book; we just ride around in the characters’ heads (and they are characters) as they reflect on their pasts and overthink interactions with dates or housemates. The stakes are quaintly low. The writing is so charming and clever that I kept finding myself reading passages over and over. I wouldn’t want to live at the Biedermeier, but it sure is a wonderful place to visit.
