"In a small Eastern European shtetl, an angel and a demon sit together in chavrusa, or partnership, to study the Talmud, as they’ve been doing for centuries. But the demon, Little Ash, convinces his partner, a variously named angel, that they should follow up on one of the young folks, who, along with many others, has gone to the United States. Passing through Ellis Island and entering the promised land of Amerike, Ash and the angel reckon with good and evil, with gender and sexuality, and with the mixing of new and old selves in this place so far from where they started."
