"A collection of unpublished work by a well-known author? Meh, I’ve heard enough of that guy, probably. I gotta be a fan. But there is another type of posthumous publishing that I cannot get enough of – the sheaf of stories found in a trunk that, once unearthed, tell us something emotional, modern, right for our time. Particularly when they belong to a woman of color only just getting her due. Kathleen Collins was a playwright, filmmaker and activist. This group of her newly found short stories is so fascinating that after reading the title story, I said a small “thank you” under my breath to her daughter for uncovering them. They’re a tour through the emotional and high-stakes time of the ‘60s and ‘70s, when interracial relationships seemed to be one path to understanding and a more cohesive future. As far from that future as we are now, it’s sad but instructive to read Collins’ stories."
