"I knew I wanted to read this book after a friend described it as Jordan Peele meets Franz Kafka. The story takes place in a near future where racial tensions in America are even worse than they are now. Our unnamed narrator is a black lawyer whose biracial son has a mysterious facial birthmark that keeps growing in size. He deeply loves his son but wants him to have a “demelanization” surgery to remove the birthmark – and his blackness. The novel is razor-sharp satire of race in America, but it’s also a moving story of familial love. I can’t wait to read whatever Maurice Carlos Ruffin writes next."
