"There is a certain wistful quality about reading the latest bestseller that Bob Woodward has written about a U.S. president and national security. Published in October, it conveys the hope that the electorate will agree with Woodward’s judgment that Donald Trump “is unfit to lead the country.” Woodward bases that judgment not only on the three books he previously published on Trump (Fear, Rage and Peril) but on Trump’s actions since to undermine President Biden and complicate his struggles with Afghanistan, Ukraine and Gaza. Woodward is surprisingly positive about the efforts of Biden and his team to control the damage and dangers, especially in Ukraine and Gaza. War also includes a report on Woodward’s 1989 interview with Trump, conducted along with colleague Carl Bernstein from the Watergate era. A transcript and voice recording of that interview resurfaced in 2023. It reveals a Trump who, at 42, sounds remarkably like the Trump of today."
