Unsheltered: A Novel

"In Unsheltered, Barbara Kingsolver flits back and forth between two turbulent times in America, right after the Civil War and during the 2016 campaign. The strong female protagonists in both epochs struggle with issues of race and class and making sense of a world that increasingly looks to strongmen to guide it. In an interview with NPR, she said, “I wanted to write about how people behave when their world seems to be coming apart. And why do we keep trying old solutions to new problems when it looks like they’re not working anymore? “She provides no answers but allows us to look at how our past can guide us in our present."
