"As a die-hard Almost Famous fan, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Cameron Crowe’s memoir about the years that inspired the movie. Crowe was just a teenager when he started writing for Rolling Stone. The Uncool takes you backstage and on the road with some of the biggest artists of the 1970s – The Allman Brothers Band, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Joni Mitchell and more. In a reversal of the usual tendency to compare the movie adaptation to the book, it’s fun to compare the book to the movie – the real stories are often much grittier and darker than the Hollywood version. I was particularly moved by Crowe’s account of his late sister Cathy, who died by suicide, and how her absence and the silence around her death in part drove him to spend a life asking questions."
