"Like its title, the stories in this collection are deceptively simple. “Where were you when” is invoked explicitly in one; more often, the stories concern themselves, very quietly, with how great historical events linger in the lives of ordinary men and women. I’m still thinking about “Blushes” – when a 72-year-old doctor thinks back on his 10th birthday while driving to the hospital for a shift in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ll be adding this book to my shelf. I’m not ready to part with it."
