"Transcription is a spy novel that at first seems pretty tame. At the start of WWII, Juliet Armstrong is recruited by MI5 to eavesdrop on a group of Nazi sympathizers in Britain and transcribe their conversations. It’s not the exciting kind of mission most spy thrillers are made of, but in a profession that has deceit at its core, even the dullest job can veer into dark corners that will haunt its practitioners for as long as they live. Kate Atkinson is a great storyteller, and while this doesn’t quite measure up to the emotional rollercoaster of her previous novel, Life After Life, it is still a jolly good read."

"Having devoured Kate Atkinson's "Transcription," I then pressed it on to my wife Miranda — not that she needed much encouraging!"

""Transcription," by Kate Atkinson (who is one of those can-do-no-wrong writers, in my opinion)."
