"All the narrator of Hilary Leichter’s satirical first novel really wants is permanence. Or to be more precise, “the steadiness”: i.e., a permanent job. It’s a dream, though, that seems unlikely to happen. Her mother was a temp, and the chances are good (bad?) that she will be, too. As she reports for work at a series of increasingly bizarre workplaces – from window washing to delivering mail to a gig on a pirate ship to one where she reports for duty as a barnacle – the pace of the novel speeds up and becomes ever more surreally delectable."
