"Roberts really gets under the skin of the city – the character is based on himself. Anyway, Bombay is full of wanderers and transients and he meets this Swiss woman and falls in love with her but somehow can’t really get his hands around her. It is a constantly evasive and elusive love. In a different culture from his own he meets someone who is essentially from the same culture. Yes and no. Well, no. They do get together but it doesn’t work out. He ends up fighting for the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan but there is something good about this guy. Johnny Depp is apparently involved in making a film out of this book."
