Leckie has a gift for using language both as worldbuilding and as plot device, and here the use of second-person creates an effect that’s both intimate and distancing — Eolo’s motivations and inner state remain opaque to us, even as we realize that the narrator’s close interest in him is not entirely trustworthy or benign."
