"Tess Gunty’s debut novel, The Rabbit Hutch, takes place in a dying Midwest town that industry left behind and focuses mainly on the inhabitants of an affordable-housing building there. Their lives are varied – there’s the new mother afraid of her newborn’s eyes, the single woman who moderates an obituary website and a group of four teens who have aged out of foster care. Their ways of coping with their lives are also varied: One man rubs himself in glow-stick liquid, while one girl is obsessed with female Catholic saints. The book, which won the National Book Award for fiction, is at times darkly funny, at times absurd and at times heavy, but it is creative and fascinating throughout."
