Panther

by Brecht Evens

In Belgian writer/artist Brecht Evens’ previous works The Wrong Place and The Making Of, he employed colorful, chaotic ink washes to lampoon urban life and the art world, respectively. Panther’s story, about a small girl’s imaginary playmate, is far more intimate — and disturbing — than those works, but Evens once again uses watercolor tableaux bursting with bold detail to tell it. At first, his imagery may seem jarring, even confusing, but it steadily coalesces as the true subject of the book reveals itself. An assured and accomplished work that — fair warning — goes to a very dark place.
