"When was the last time you stayed up to finish a thriller? I usually answer that question with Ken Follett’s *Eye of the Needle* or Geoffrey Household’s *Rogue Male*, two classic World War II suspense novels. This year, though, I added a different kind of novel: Heather Gudenkauf’s *Not a Sound*, a terrific “woman in trouble” tale.
Gudenkauf’s heroine, Amelia Winn, is profoundly deaf. (Gudenkauf herself identifies as hearing-impaired.) When Amelia and her dog, Stitch, discover the corpse of a former co-worker near her isolated cabin, she begins investigating and sinister happenings escalate. The climax here – involving the intrepid Stitch – is a real knuckle-biter."
