"This was hands down my favorite horror anthology of 2024. The stories are loudly and proudly Latinx, queer, feminist and working-class. You’ll encounter Black Panthers and vampires, witches and magical clothes, brave activists and cops who get what’s coming to them. Longtime San Francisco Bay Area residents will love picking up the references to local sights – places that never hit the tourist tours or the big bestsellers. Of the 12 stories in the anthology, the eponymous story is the one I think about the most. Set in 1970, the piece is about a woman named Serena who can create custom-made nightmares. She’s forced to work against the interests of some local activists and decides to resist in the only way she knows how."
