Mrs. Fletcher

"Once again, the author of The Leftovers and Little Children has written what feels like a narrow peek into a wide world, just one chapter in a vast, ongoing soap opera. There are many voices here, but the primary characters are a middle-aged mom exploring her sexuality after her son heads to college and the son, a jock who’s baffled when his pleasure-chasing self-absorption alienates people he wanted to impress. Both characters struggle with neediness and deal with rejection, but Perrotta’s bright, humorous edge and impeccably detailed characterization turn these seeming personal tragedies into a wry satire of modern relationships."
