"At a time when grown-ups struggle to thoughtfully tackle culture issues, a diverse group of middle schoolers debates their stereotypical “Indian mascot.” This multiple-viewpoint novel in verse reflects opinions of those with anti-racism, pro-Indigenous perspectives and of those who prioritize school tradition and “fun.” The conversation, which begins in the classroom, tests the tweens and their relationships. Respectively Black and Cherokee co-authors deftly interweave nuances of identity and impact with noteworthy attention to socioeconomic class.
