"Seventeen-year-old Frederica “Freddy” Riley has a big problem, as she explains to an advice column: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me. I couldn’t get enough of this book. Mariko Tamaki’s dialogue feels so natural, and her characters are infinitely relatable; they reminded me of myself and the people who have broken my heart, in the best (and sometimes the worst) ways. Rosemary Valero-O’Connell’s art is charming and full of life, and her use of space and paneling on the page enhances the characters’ melancholy and isolation. Laura Dean is a wrenching read at times, but it would be a good companion for a teen experiencing these feelings for the first time or, for adults, a bittersweet reminder of growing pains past."
