"Can kids have jobs? Sure! Cecilia has two! On the one hand, she has the job of being a normal kid, and on the other, she’s an interpreter for her Spanish-speaking parents. But what happens when one job begins to overwhelm the other? The idea of Cecilia’s “job” is beautifully rendered visually in the metaphorical suits and ties that she and the other children of immigrants wear. With such a serious subject, it would be easy to create a dour, serious picture book. Instead, the tone and art keep things light and amusing throughout, while always bearing in mind how easy it is to overwhelm kids with adult concerns. There’s no blame here. Just an honest examination of how everyone needs to find balance in their daily lives. (For ages 5 to 8)"
