Greyhound: A Memoir

"In 2006, grieving multiple miscarriages, Canadian writer Joanna Pocock embarked on a road trip across the U.S. via Greyhound bus. Seventeen years later, she repeated her Detroit-to-Los Angeles passage – a journey she chronicles in her new memoir. Pocock’s trip takes on what she calls a “mythical dimension.” Seatmates come and go, but delays are constant. One driver abruptly walks off the job in Indianapolis, and America seems coarsened by COVID-19 and capitalism. “Much of the hope I had seen in 2006 had evaporated,” she writes. Greyhound weaves together observations from Pocock’s two journeys, along with environmental and cultural commentary. The end result is an engaging combination of the profound and the profane – much like the country Pocock traverses."
