"Good Night, Irene is historical fiction based on Luis Alberto Urrea’s mother, who served as a Red Cross volunteer in an outfit called the Clubmobile Corps in World War II. These so-called Donut Dollies made doughnuts and served coffee in a 2.5-ton GMC truck, boosting morale and providing comfort to the soldiers. Oh – and they also drove to the front lines, were trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge and were there when Gen. Patton liberated Buchenwald. I like that this novel is a fresh take on WWII history, but I love that it’s an epic buddy comedy starring characters who model friendship, courage, good humor and wit even in the toughest of circumstances."
