Glass Houses: A Novel

"*Glass Houses*, the 13th in Louise Penny’s series about Chief Inspector (now Superintendent) Armand Gamache, is what I think of as one of the “Great Gamaches.” This latest entry offers an intricately braided plot and a near apocalyptic climax.
A macabre figure materializes at a Halloween party in Gamache’s home village of Three Pines. The black-robed stranger has come to collect “a debt of conscience.” Things swiftly go downhill from there in a tale that involves the current opioid crisis, as well as Three Pines’ violent history during Prohibition. Enough. Any plot summary falls short of conveying the dark magic of this series."
