"Fleishman Is in Trouble is ostensibly the story of embittered divorce-to-be, Toby, but through a magic trick of narration, Toby’s story is presented by Libby, his old friend who begins as a shadow on the page but gradually asserts her own perspective while laying out his. Through these layered narratives we begin to see Rachel, Toby’s absent, much maligned wife, take shape. Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s writing is sharp-eyed and attentive – each page is littered with precise observations of modern life that are funny and sometimes chilling in their accuracy. It’s a book to be gobbled and enjoyed, certainly, but its insights are profound. In the end, though Toby Fleishman is the center and title of the book, he is not its subject – a thought experiment in empathy that every person in a relationship ought to try."
