"It’s three weeks after the events of Children of Blood and Bone and Zélie has successfully brought magic back to the land of Orïsha. But not just to the maji – to the people, like Zélie, who originally had it. The nobility and the military now have powerful magic, too, and they want to use it to get rid of the maji for good. And Zélie really doesn’t want to spend another 400 pages being a heroine. She falters, she fails, she thinks about running away. She’s depressed. This wasn’t the sequel I necessarily wanted for Zélie (don’t worry, it’s still as full of plot twists and action sequences as the first), but her journey is so incredibly human that I’m fine with having my expectations upended.
