"Alice Dartle is a witch, from a long line of witches, seeking her fortune as an independent woman of the 1920s in Cassadega, Fla., learning from and living among a thriving community of clairvoyants. Tomás Cordero is a bereaved tailor recently back from the Great War, haunted by a spirit who communicates in random acts of arson. Tomás travels to Cassadega seeking Alice’s help, but fires start easily in Cassadega and its witches refuse to burn. Though muddled by pacing issues in its middle, this is a warm, charming, very loving book, with well-drawn characters whose happiness I cheered on throughout."
