"My first thought when I saw John le Carré had written a new novel: Oh no. His last book, A Legacy of Spies, had been a perfect cap to a literary career spanning half a century, with its return to George Smiley and other iconic characters from his early books. It only took a few pages of reading Agent Running in the Field to change that view. The novel has all the hallmarks of a classic le Carré story: surprise plot twists, cryptic meetings in exotic locales, verbal jousting among high-brow British socialites, etc, etc. It drops all those ingredients into a plot touching on current events, including Brexit and, yes, President Trump. It all adds up to a charming and fun read."
